Painted in the dramatic & beautiful Hudson River School style, Tracy spent over a year in research to create Kosciuszko's Garden at West Point - the place he made for his own retreat from the rigors of war. Holding a book and looking over the Hudson River towards the sunrise, Kosciuszko pauses from working in his garden and reflects on the American struggle for Independence and thinks of what such independence could hold for Poland.

"Col. Kosciuszko, a gentleman of distinction from Poland...amused himself while stationed on this point, in laying out a curious garden in a deep valley, abounding more in rocks than soil. I was gratified with viewing his curious water fountain with spraying jets and cascades" Dr. James Thacher Kosciuszko also placed wild flowers around the fountain that reminded him of his native Poland.

True to the philosophy of the Hudson River School, a dead tree stump is included in the painting as a momento mori, however, Tracy has also painted new growth rising from the roots to symbolize Kosciuszko's efforts that eventually led to Poland's freedom albeit after his death.

According to research, the place of the garden on a small outcrop on the side of a cliff posed not only privacy but inaccessibility. Kosciuszko lowered soil by buckets to the garden to use for the flowers he planted. I have his officer's coat hung on a nearby tree.
